HAMBURG-EPPENDORF ENHANCES MEDICAL TRAINING WITH A FLEXIBLE, SECURE VIDEO PLATFORM FOR RESEARCH AND FEEDBACK

The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) is renowned for its excellence in medical education and research. Ranked among the top hospitals globally, UKE holds the 35th position in Newsweek's "World's Best Hospitals 2025" rankings. The institution is a hub for innovation and leadership.
Recognizing the pivotal role of effective communication in anesthesiology, UKE integrated Videolab into their Department of Anesthesiology curriculum to provide students with opportunities for self-reflection and structured feedback.

The Problem
By integrating Videolab into their curriculum, students can observe and analyse their interactions, fostering improved self-awareness and communication proficiency. This approach is especially beneficial in complex scenarios like emergency medicine, where clear communication is critical.
We spoke with Anesthesiology experts Parisa Moll-Khosrawi and Leonie Kröger, who are leading the research on integrating Videolab into their training program. As they reflected on their experience with the platform, Parisa shared that one of the most helpful features is the timeline functionality:

“The timeline feature, where you can provide positive or negative feedback and comment on specific moments in the recording, is incredibly helpful. Students can review this feedback at their own pace and reflect more effectively.”
Looking ahead

Building on the success of the deployment in anesthesiology, UKE are now expanding Videolab to the pediatrics department. This new deployment will support over 150 junior students per year during their pediatrics course.
A key challenge in pediatrics is training students to communicate effectively with parents, especially in emotionally charged situations. Videolab will be used both for immediate debriefing and for reflective analysis later on.
The team anticipates that this dual-phase feedback approach will deepen student awareness of their communication style and encourage innovative teaching practices across the institution.
By integrating Videolab into their training programs, UKE demonstrates a commitment to advancing medical education through innovative technologies that prepare students for the complexities of patient care.
“Videolab will have a great impact on healthcare.”
